Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, with the formula Cu 2 CO 3 (OH) 2.This opaque, green-banded mineral crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, and most often forms botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses, in fractures and deep, underground spaces, where the water table and hydrothermal fluids provide the means for chemical precipitation.

An informal name for dark green to black amphiboles, mostly ferro-hornblende or magnesio-hornblende according to the current nomenclature. In the book "Rock-forming minerals, volume 2b, double chain silicates" by Deer, Howie & Zussman (1997), the term "hornblende" is used as a group name for all aluminous amphiboles in the calcium amphibole subgroup of the Amphibole Supergroup.
